That’s where 24 Peruvian Ambassadors have lived since the 1940s. But while the embassy sits right in the middle of Massachusetts Avenue’s Embassy Row, the real tribute to Peru is a few miles away in Northwest Washington’s Forest Hills neighborhood. The embassy is located in a mansion once owned by a 19th century congressman who also once owned the Washington Post. The bakery looked much as it had when she'd first seen it. Seraph crossed the bridge, skirted the few people tending animals, and headed for the steps of the steep road that zigzagged its way up the mountain face, edged with stone buildings. The rich hues of new wood contrasted with the greys of the village, but, to her, that seemed to be merely an accent to the harmony of stone buildings and craggy mountain. Even after twenty years, the sight still impressed her.įrom where she stood, the new temple at the very top of the village rose like a falcon over its prey. She glanced across the river and up the mountainside where Redern hung, terraced like some ancient giant's stone garden. ![]() When Seraph reached the narrow bridge, the river was high and the wooden walkway was slick with cold water from the spring runoff. ![]() 6/25/2023 0 Comments Woman hating by andrea dworkin![]() ![]() Last Days at Hot Slit: The Radical Feminism of Andrea Dworkin, published in March and edited by Johanna Fateman and Amy Scholder, brings together Dworkin’s most impactful writings, including selections from Woman Hating (1974), Our Blood: Prophesies and Discourses on Sexual Politics (1976), Pornography: Men Possessing Women (1981), and Intercourse (1987), among other works and previously unpublished essays. “The purpose of theory is to clarify the world in which we live, how it works, why things happen as they do. In 2005, MacKinnon wrote that the radical feminist author “lived the stigma of being identified with women, especially sexually abused women,” “exposed the ugliest realities of women’s lives and said what they mean,” “saw through male power as a political system,” and “exposed the sexual core of male supremacy, the heart of the male darkness.” A courageous (and prolific) writer with a passion for justice, Dworkin rooted her feminism in the lives of the most downtrodden women. ![]() ![]() MacKinnon, the prolific Dworkin’s writing did just that. Agent: Ed Victor, Ed Victor Literary Agency (U.K.). The Black-Eyed Blonde: A Philip Marlowe Novel, by Benjamin Black, Mantle, RRP£16.99/Henry Holt & Co, RRP27, 320 pages. We both ordered coffees and began to talk about the narrator in question: Philip Marlowe. While the mystery is well plotted, Black elevates it beyond mere thoughtful homage with a plausible injection of emotion in his wounded lead. In his new novel, The Black-Eyed Blonde ( Henry Holt ), he has the narrator grouse about the phony Irish pubs of Los Angeles, but this hotel restaurant seemed sufficiently like a hotel restaurant in London to escape Banville’s condemnation. The case appears to wrap up quickly after Marlowe learns that Peterson was the victim of a hit-and-run, but Cavendish has some major revelations in store. ![]() When Marlowe shakes hands with someone, “It was like being given a sleek, cool-skinned animal to hold for a moment or two.” The title character, Clare Cavendish, wanders into Marlowe’s office to ask him to trace her lover, Nico Peterson, who disappeared two months earlier. ![]() As for the language, Black nails Chandler’s creative and memorable similes and metaphors. Parker’s lengthy experience in the PI genre, his sequel to The Big Sleep, Perchance to Dream, pales in comparison with Black’s pitch-perfect recreation of the character and his time and place. Black (the pseudonym that John Banville uses for his crime fiction) isn’t the first to tackle the daunting challenge of recreating the distinctive narrative voice of Raymond Chandler’s world-weary, mean streets–walking L.A. ![]() 6/25/2023 0 Comments Kenneth anger book![]() ![]() “I went to Beverly Hills High School, and there used to be a red car, a streetcar-it doesn’t exist anymore-but I used to take that from Beverly Hills to Hollywood, and come to Musso & Frank,” Anger told me.Īnger is 88. And let’s not omit the Dutch and their “Tulipomania” of 1635-1636. Ditto for the Brits and the “South-Sea Bubble,” which followed almost immediately thereafter. Perhaps the French are just a tad embarrassed by this bit of their history. Well, maybe in the Business Schools of Harvard, Wharton or Columbia.Ī shame that no one’s ever made a movie on the subject of John Law and the “Mississippi Madness” of 1719-1720. The fact is, it’s a damned good book, an easy read of 4-5 hours, and a bit of history one never gets in school. I haven’t read enough primary literature on crowd psychology to know whether “(t)his is the most important book ever written” on that subject. Insana’s observation on the rear cover of this compendium of Charles Mackay’s and Joseph de la Vega’s treatises sounds like a bit of hyperbole, let's just remember that Mr. A serious student of the markets and even anyone interested in the extremes of human behavior should read this book (Ron Insana, writing for CNBC).” “This is the most important book ever written about crowd psychology and, by extension, about financial markets. ![]() 6/24/2023 0 Comments The bone season series bundle![]() The author takes this familiar story and, basically, complicates it. The Bone Season is a story I feel like I've read before in various other fantasy-lite novels - the one that first came to mind being Shadow and Bone. In my opinion, it shows definite potential for Shannon's future as a writer but the story is a regurgitated version of one that has been told countless times. ![]() However, I just didn't think The Bone Season was anything special or original. I really wanted her debut to take me out of this world and leave me desperate to get my hands on the next installment. I really wanted Shannon to be the next J.K.Rowling, as some are calling her. It sounds stupid but I actually feel slightly guilty at how disappointed I was with it and I think the main reason is because the author is a British student of the same age as me and, as soon as I learned that, I really wanted her to succeed. ![]() I really, really wanted to like this book. ![]() 6/24/2023 0 Comments Troika by Alastair Reynolds![]() ![]() Appeared in THE STARRY RIFT, edited by Jonathan Strahan, 2008.
