Instead, the greatest gift her parents gave her was the ability to express herself creatively. Growing up, Yoshimoto hung around the likes of Pedro Almodovar and the Dalai Lama, however, that privilege never stained her later in life. Her father is often cited as a Japanese philopsher who inspired decades of disgruntled youth. Her father, Takaaki Yoshimoto is a famous intellectual poet, critic, and social activist. Now that we have that boring mess out of the way on with our Woman Writer of the week one of my personal favorite modern wordsmiths: Banana Yoshimoto.īorn Yoshimoto Mahoko on July 24th 1964 in Tokyo, she was raised in a very liberal household.
